ECOPARAISO XIXIM, near CelestunClick here for larger image - Located 70 minutes west of Merida, near the small fishing village of Celestun, this small beachfront eco-resort lies inside the biosphere reserve protecting one of the worldís few pink flamingo habitats. Comfortable lodging is offered in 15 large palm-thatched stucco bungalows. Incredible shells are found exploring the endless white sand beaches in this remote area of the Yucatan. There is also a beachfront fresh water swimming pool and club house with bar and games. A well-stocked library-video room provides background material on the many sites to be visited during a stay at Eco Paraiso. Bungalows have two queen beds, ceiling fans, private bath, and private porch with two hammocks. Guest can bicycle a 7 km. trail to see the diverse flora and fauna. VILLAS DELFINES, Isla HolboxClick here for larger image - Isla Holbox, a little known barrier island off the Yucatanís northern coast and about three times larger than Isla Mujeres, is a laid back "sleepy village" type place. This natural area is the home to green sea turtles and the nearby pink flamingo nesting grounds at Rio Lagartos Reserve. Local boat trips can be arranged for snorkeling, to Isla Pajaros for bird-watching, to Cenote Yalahau on the coast for swimming and a jungle tour, to see dolphins in their natural environment, and to explore a rarely visited Maya ruin at Ecab. Villas Delfines, a small ecological type resort, offers ten comfortable round stucco, thatched roof cabanas, all beachfront, with wooden verandas and hammocks. Native materials are used in the decor including Talavera tiled baths and showers pouring from real seashells. Each cabana has ceiling fans, good cross ventilation, and tropical netting over two double beds. There is a small restaurant and bar, open air lodge type lobby, yoga or activities palapa, and beach volleyball. PESCA MAYA, Tulum PeninsulaClick here for larger image - About 40 km. south of Tulum, deep in the heart of the Sian Kaían Biosphere Reserve, nestled in palms next to the turquoise Caribbean, the 10 simple cabanas at Pesca Maya offer the adventurer and nature lover an authentic experience. Accommodations are in stucco and thatched roof bungalows with private baths, double beds or 2 twins, and screened front porch. The sea is steps away from the front door. All meals and soft drinks are provided in a simply constructed open air thatched palapa with wood floor and views of the ocean. Daily excursions are included. Guests snorkel the coral reef to see the varied marine life, with guide, including viewing dolphins and manatees. Turtles and their nests are seen on night treks between May and September. A naturalist guide leads day trips to see the frigates, parrots, spoonbills and many of the over 325 kinds of birds in the 1.3 million acre reserve. Fly fishing (bone fishing) is excellent in Bahia Asencion and can be done with a guide at extra charge, including all equipment. PICOCANOA JUNGLE LODGE, Veracruz StateClick here for larger image - This comfortable jungle lodge, next to the Antigua River, lies nestled in the tropical foothills of the tallest peaks in Mexico. It is about 1 hour from Veracruzís capital city Xalapa. With the lodge as a base, guests can raft 5 different rivers (Class II-V), trek to hidden pre-Hispanic sanctuaries, enjoy jungle nature hikes, whitewater kayak, climb, rappel, ride horses, fish, mountain bike, and snooze in a hammock between adventures. The lodge has a swimming pool, river-side open air dining room, poolside palapa bar, multi-purpose room, native sweat lodge (temascal), small store and purified drinking water. The 24 native style cabanas, made of adobe and thatched roofs, have private baths with tiled showers and hot/cold water, 1 double bed or 2 twin beds, and another twin bed in a loft reached by a ladder. Each cabana has a porch and is decorated with local art and hand-painted ceramic fixtures. Meals using fresh produce and local specialties are included. RANCHO LEONERO, Bahia de PalmasClick here for larger image - On the Sea of Cortez, often called East Cape, 27 air conditioned bungalow and hotel style rooms perch atop a rise overlooking a sandy beach and the calm sea. Those interested in outdoor activities and experiences in a comfortably rustic setting will enjoy the kayaking, hiking, beach runs, whale-watching, fishing, excellent snorkeling and diving, windsurfing and yoga classes offered here. Massage is available, there is a video viewing room, and pool overlooking the sea. Rooms (two double or queen beds) have red tile floors, flagstone walls, and thatched roofs. Healthy meals are served family style with lots of fresh fish and vegetables from the resortís organic garden. During January - March, fly over to Bahia Magdalena and Laguna San Ignacio where the gray whales and their newborn calves cavort in the Baja sun. Guided hikes are arranged to desert hot springs and to the 7,090 ft. Picacho de la Laguna, from which both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez are seen simultaneously. Divers will enjoy the Cabo Pulmo living reef, just 45 minutes south of Rancho Leonero by car or boat. HOTELITO DESCONOCIDO, Cruz de LoretoClick here for larger image - On 60 kms. of completely virgin beach about 1.5 hours south of Puerto Vallarta, staying at this "unknown little hotel" is an experience for active travelers who appreciate nature. The incongruities of staying in an elegantly rustic cabana suite, on stilts with thatched roof and ceiling fans, and sleeping in an exotic canopied king bed surrounded by antiques and candles, stretches the imagination. LA PUERTECITA BOUTIQUE HOTEL, San Miguel de AllendeClick here for larger image - A short walk from the center of this historic silver town founded in 1542, guests at this former mayorís mansion enjoy several experiences: luxury rooms and suites (24 total); daytime outdoor activities such as mountain biking, golf and tennis; and a selection of art, ceramic, language, and cooking classes. There are also 2 heated swimming pools, outdoor Jacuzzi, spa, massage, and a fitness center. At 6500 ft. elevation and semi-tropical latitude, the weather is perfect year-round for mountain biking. The adventure is biking through picturesque towns built over 400 years ago and beautiful countryside (much like southern Europe), stopping for a dip in natural hot springs along the way. There are trails for all levels. Front-suspension bicycles, helmets and guides are provided. After a day of exploring, return to the hotelís friendly staff, quiet gardens, fine dining, and luxurious accommodations.
