Self-Drive VacationsClick here for larger image - On our self-drive Yucatan vacations, explore many large and lesser-known archaeological sites in the Yucatan Peninsula with an Avis rental car (from VW beetles to vans). The roads are easy and safe to drive and afford choices not available on tours: stop for a picnic amongst the ruins of an old hacienda; explore a mound in a field that turns out to be a jungle-covered pyramid; stop for a swim in a fresh water cenote; buy hammocks at a small Mayan na (house). Our pre-planned itineraries include hotel accommodations, vehicle, maps, and sightseeing suggestions, as well as suggested reading. Solsierra also plans custom self-drive trips using any of the hotels, lodges, condos, or villas listed in our Special Places. For your own custom self-drive itinerary, contact us by email.

Adventure TripsClick here for larger image - Do you like to snorkel remote Caribbean reefs with water visibility up to 200 feet? Explore little-known Maya, Totonaca, Huasteca and other pre-columbian temples and structures still covered in vines and jungle? Trek with burros into a remote area of the North America’s largest and deepest canyon, the Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon)? Raft a thrilling Class IV-V river or an easier Class III-IV or Class III in the heart of lush Veracruz jungle, camping and exploring little known ruins along the way? Hike to prehispanic sanctuaries after rappelling into a jungle canyon? Enjoy a beach campfire dinner with like-minded travelers, followed by a night search for nesting turtles? Our "On the Move" adventure trips, for active travelers in reasonable physical condition, offer this and more. All equipment, meals, transportation, and logistics are provided so you can savor the experience without the planning hassles. Our bilingual or multi-lingual guides are marine biologists, naturalists well-educated in local flora and fauna, expert rafters and mountaineers. Equipment is U.S. made or up to U.S. standards. Accommodations are in provided tents, comfortable bungalows or cabanas, and at small local hotels.

Culture & Nature Trips Click here for larger image - Mexico’s incredible bio-diversity (30,000 plant species, nearly 1,000 bird species, and 1,500 mammals, reptiles and amphibians) has lead scientists to estimate that 15% of Mexico’s species are found nowhere else on earth. Most of Mexico lies in the subtropics, but with volcanoes as high as 5700 meters (18,701 ft.), an inland plateau over 1,525 meters (5,000 ft.), and with over 8900 km. (6,000 mi.) of coastline, the climates and habitats vary greatly. Rainforests and tropical jungle cover southern Mexico up the Gulf coast to Veracruz state while inland altitudes create a year-round spring-like climate. On the human side, ancient pre-Columbian cultures include Olmecas (1200-200 B.C.), Totonaca and Huasteca (500-1200 A.D.) Maya (1200 B.C.-1400 A.D.), Zapoteca-Mixteca (900 B.C.-1400 A.D.), Tolteca (950-1300 A.D.), and Azteca (1345-1521 A.D.). Many of their descendants still live according to native customs, with an estimated 80% of the total population of certain areas (mainly the Yucatan Peninsula and southern Mexico) speaking the native language. Solsierra has created "On the Move" Trips to learn about Mexico’s natural wonders, ancient and modern customs, arts, crafts, and language. We take you to see such unusual sights as the whale migrations, prehispanic archaeological sites, colorful markets, native ceremonies and celebrations.
